Emma Horensky Obituary

Emma M. Horensky, 90, of Columbus, Ohio, and a former longtime resident of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 6, 2023. Born December 31, 1932, Emma was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Hliboky Gula. Emma was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church before moving to Ohio in 2017.

Emma was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed doing crafts and baking, especially kolache during the holidays. Emma was an active member of the Dorcas Guild at St. Matthew’s and participated in many church events over the years. It was at St. Matthew’s that she met her husband of 68 years, Raymond Horensky, formerly of Wilkes Barre. Emma was a woman before her time, having been the one to ask Ray on a date. Ray and Emma were married on July 17, 1954, upon Raymond’s return from service in the Korean War. Raymond passed away on September 1, 2022, with Emma by his side.

Emma was also preceded in death by her brothers: Daniel; Andrew; John; and George, and her sisters: Anne Rutski, Mary Matushek, and Helen Kaskus. She is survived by her three children: Sandra and her husband Allan Molotsky of Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania; Susan and her husband Wesley Rhiel of Gahanna, Ohio; and Raymond and his wife Jane of Slatington, Pennsylvania.

Emma loved talking to and spending time with her grandchildren: Chloe Cerwinka and her husband Max Blaustein; David Molotsky and his wife Elizabeth Ball; Rebecca Molotsky and her husband Javier Piraino; Thomas Rhiel and his wife Betsy Morais; Andy Rhiel; Megan Horensky; and Emily Horensky, and her four great grandchildren: Frances; Charles; Emelia, and Minna, all of whom lovingly referred to Emma as their “Grandmom” or “Nana”.

Emma is also survived by her sister, Betty Paris of Elgin, Illinois; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless relatives in Hankovce, Slovakia.

Visitation and a memorial service for Emma and Ray will be held in Wilkes-Barre at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at February 25, 2023, with visitation from 12 to 1 pm and the memorial funeral service at 1 pm. Interment at Fern Knoll Burial Park in Dallas, Pennsylvania will be private.

The family would like to thank the care teams at the New Albany Care Center and Capital City Hospice for their kindness and quality care during Emma’s final months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Emma’s memory to St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
