Joseph R. Lendacky

Joseph Lendacky Obituary

     Mr. Joseph R. Lendacky, 78, a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre, passed peacefully into Eternal Life Christmas morning while in the care of Residential Hospice inpatient unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre with his devoted brother and nephew at his bedside.

     Born on March 25, 1942 in Wilkes-Barre, he was one of three children to the late Andrew J. and Ann B. (Olenik) Lendacky.  Educated at the former Sacred Heart Slovak School in North Wilkes-Barre, Joseph then became a member of the 1960 graduating class of the James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.  It was in his youth he began his work experience picking vegetables at local farms in South Wilkes-Barre.

     Following his education, he served our country with the United States Navy.  Upon his return home, he served as dairy manager for Giant Market on South Main Street; was employed by the former Jack Manley Firestone Tire in Wilkes-Barre; tended bar for Lowe's Lounge, Senuna's and the American Legion Post #132, all formerly downtown.  He later retired as a clerk for Bargains Galore and Sunshine food markets of Wilkes-Barre.

     In his spare time, Joseph held membership in the North End Slovak Citizens Club; the American Legion Post #132, both of Wilkes-Barre; the Henry Club and the Polish Club of Plains Township.

     Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother; also by his longtime friend, John D. "Jack" Manley in 2012; his sister, Mrs. Rosemary Boyle in June of 2014, and most recently by his sister-in-law, Mrs. Marie T. (Polney) Lendacky on December 20, 2015.

     Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Mr. A. Damian Lendacky of North Wilkes-Barre; Nephews, niece and their spouses including, Damian A. Lendacky and his wife Jonine; Jack Boyle and his wife Eileen; Kevin Boyle; William Boyle and his wife Donna; Kelly Gillespie and her husband Jim; Several cousins, dear friends and his beloved companion, Poco.

     Funeral services for Mr. Lendacky will be conducted on Saturday, January 9 with his memorial funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, 668 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre.  The Reverend Kenneth M. Seegar, his pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist.  Interment will be held privately and at the convenience of the family in Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, 1594 South Main Street, Hanover Township.

     Relatives and friends may join the Lendacky family for visitation and shared remembrances directly at church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday.
