Mrs. Mary J. "Memie" (Franckiewicz) Charnitsky, 86, a resident of Wilkes-Barre's North End neighborhood, passed into Eternal Life Friday, March 26th in Allied Services Hospice Center, Meade Street, Wilkes-Barre, following a recent illness.
Born on September 8, 1934 in Wilkes-Barre, she was the last of four children to the late William M. and Madeline (Hanuszowski) Franckiewicz.
Educated in the city schools, she was a graduate of the former George W. Guthrie elementary school, and later from the James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
Mrs. Charnitsky was employed as a seamstress by the valley's former garment industry for several years until her retirement.
Mrs. Charnitsky was a member of the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, North Wilkes-Barre, having been a life member of the former Saint Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church prior to its closure. At Saint Stan's, she was active assisting with the annual parish bazaars and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
Professionally, she held membership in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
In her youth, she was an avid bowler. She enjoyed the many family gatherings over the years, especially during the holidays. More recently in her spare time, Mrs. Charnitsky enjoyed her visits to Mohegan Sun Pocono.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. Joseph M. Charnitsky on June 30, 1984. At the time of Mr. Charnitsky's passing, the couple shared twenty-one years of married life together. Also preceding her were brothers; Mr. Anthony and Mr. Joseph Franckiewicz along with her sister, Mrs. Helen Trubela.
Left to cherish the memories they have of her are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, fellow parishioners and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Charnitsky will be conducted on Friday, April 16th with her memorial funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in the Parish of Saint Andre Bessette, 668 North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre. The Reverend Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist.
Inurnment with the Rite of Committal will follow next to her husband in Mount Olivet Diocesan Catholic Cemetery, 612 Mount Olivet Road, Wyoming.
Relatives and friends may join Mary Jean's family for visitation and shared remembrances directly at church Friday morning from 10:30 a.m. until the time of her funeral Mass.
